The exact details of Jack's death are left ambiguous in both the story and the film.ALthough I would say the film seems to lean more heavily towards the idea that he was bashed ("the tire iron.") Anne Hathaway's brilliant phone scene gives the distinct impression that she's making up the story about the "accident".

I think we're just not supposed to know. Just as Ennis doesn't really know.

Die? Jack didn't die. No, silly. That's just what he wants everyone to think. Really, he's down in Mexico having a grand old time. He's just waiting until the appropriate moment to send Ennis a postcard letting him know he's doing fine and that he wants Ennis to come live with him.

But all that won't come out until the sequel. Then they'll move to San Francisco's Castro district and buy a darling little pastel Victorian fixer-upper. Alma Jr. will move in with them after her divorce.

But I've said too much already.

Point of clarification, Jack was not cheating with another woman. He told Ennis he was fooling around with the foreman's wife (the real talkative one). In reality, he was doing the foreman (Chatty Cathy's husband, the guy who invited him fishing).

Jack told Ennis that because he knew (and Ennis reinforced it moments later) that Ennis would be furious if Jack was involved with another man, but didn't have a problem thinking he was with another woman.

I couldn't agree more......maybe the wife or father-in-law had him "bumped off"....maybe he approached someone and ended up with a situation like what happened with Matthew Shephard.... we don't know.....

dont know for sure but the first time i watched it I thought that she was telling the truth about the tire iron and the "bashing" scene was what Enis imagined as she told the story because he always had that fear that something like that could happen. Muchlike what happened to the dead old man that he was forced to look at as a kid. That was at least my first take on it and I still sometimes wonder if that is the case, but we will unfortunately never know for sure.

Seemed clear to me when I first read the story that it was a gay bashing. Jack is seeking out another outlet because he is frustrated by Ennis, so he starts an affair with the ranch foreman and then gets caught. I understand it is totally subjective, but isn't the theme of the story so much more powerful if he gets murdered for being gay?

Who gets killed by a tire??

Jack dies because of the long time exhaustation from waitting for Ennis. At least, it is my own interpretation. The movie itself suggests he might be beaten up to death like the old guy's death Ennis witnessed during his early childhood. Seriously, it is not important how he die, it is whether they could make their lives better if Ennis have dared to take a step further. Would that change everything in thier lives regardless whether they both got killed in the end. I wonder which one is worthwhile, to live without your true love or die of pursuing your true love.

Maybe they should have had a 3 way with the foreman and made it more exciting for everyone. Maybe they could have had one of those rules like "Never stray. Always play together. " A men awe juh twah could have spiced things up a bit! : )
